Useful tips about traveling with your pet

When vacations start, it's time to enjoy a lovely holiday with family, friends, and pets.

Planning a vacation with pets requires a lot of tips to have in mind. First of all, you must provide your pet an identification, a tag or id indicating your name, your pet's name, an address, and a telephone number.  

Then you must take your pet to the vet, to have a routine medical exam. It's not so advisable to give tranquilizers to your pet unless they are prescribed by your veterinarian, or if you have to make a long trip, by car or by plane.

If you travel by car, make sure your pet is comfortable in its kennel and don't forget to put a comfortable blanket and a toy inside. Small animals can travel in kennels secured in the car. Prepare a First Aid kit, with some cotton and alcohol in case your pet gets injured. Also get the phone of a vet in the place where you are traveling to.

Pets tend to drink a lot more when they travel, so make sure to give them water periodically. Never leave your pet unattended inside the car. Heat may cause dehydration and even death.

In case you travel with your pet by plane, you must have in mind quite a few things. First visit your vet to make sure your pet is healthy and ready to travel. Many airlines will not allow an animal without all the required vaccines certificates, including rabies. When traveling abroad with your pet, you must be aware of all the regulations of the country you are going to.

It is highly recommended to take your pet with you on board. Generally, only small dogs and cats are allowed, and there are limits to the number of animals permitted in the cabin area. But it's worth a try! If you have to travel with a big dog, it will fly in the cargo hold. You have to be sure your dog is going to have a safe flight. The first thing to do is to take a direct flight, so you will avoid the mistakes that occur during airline transfers. Ask if you can watch your pet being loaded and unloaded from the plane. Make sure to put a travel label with your name, address and telephone on your pet's kennel.

Do not feed your pet for four to six hours prior to air travel, only give it fresh water and when it is in the cargo hold you can put ice cubes instead of water.
