Pet passport: travel around Europe with your pet

Since 2004, the European Union has issued a passport for pets that live in the EU. This document controls the movements of the animals preventing illegal traffic. This passport is specially for dogs, cats and ferrets traveling around the countries of the European Union.

The pet passport itself comes in multiple forms. The document features the owner's personal data (name, surname, ID, nationality, address), and the pet's photo and information (pedigree, color, age, name and microchip number). It also includes the list of vaccines and the treatments that the animal had had up to the date of the travel. Your pet has to be antirabies vaccinated and the certifications should be signed by an approved vet.

This certificate is very important because it will be required by all airlines, buses and trains. It is also very important for you and your pet's health.

For the passport proceedings, the first thing you have to do is a routine medical exam to ensure that your pet is in proper condition to travel. Then you have to update the list of vaccines, which must be signed by a vet.

You can check for more information about traveling with your pet at the official EU website.

However, every country has its specific regulations. You have to be sure of the requirements depending on the country you intend to travel to. Some, for example, ask for an extra government certification on the passport.

If you are planning a trip through Europe with your pet, having this passport will be very helpful. Book now your favorite pet friendly hotels in Europe and have a wonderful holiday with your best friend!
